With nearly 1 billion tourists crisscrossing the globe every year, it's more important than ever for travelers to minimize their individual impact on the earth's natural and cultural treasures. Taking a green approach to travel is an easy and essential way to protect the places you love to visit (like Newport County!), not just for yourself but for the travelers who come after you and for the people who will continue to live there long after you've gone home. Leave your car behind!
Did you know that you can get to most places in Newport by bike or by foot? And you will be able to enjoy the fresh salt air and get some exercise while you explore! If you do need a vehicle, park at the Visitors Center and let the RIPTA trolleys take you wherever you need to go. Parking at the Visitors Center will only set you back $2.50 if you show your trolley ticket.

Shop Local
Support local private businesses and bring your own shopping bags or only accept one shopping bag from a retailer and tote all of your items from each store in one bag.

Many of our local hotels, inns and B&B’s are doing their part to green up their act. Eliminating the use of Styrofoam throughout their buildings, implementing recycling programs, switching to energy saving appliances and light bulbs and providing free parking for hybrid vehicles are just a few examples of what you will find when you stay in one of the hotels, inns and B&B’s here in Newport County.

And don’t forget the restaurants! You’ll be able to enjoy Rhode Island grown and raised food when you eat out in many Newport County restaurants because local is the name of the game. From fish that is caught off of our shores to the delicious vegetables that are grown at our beautiful local farms and wine from the vineyards down the road, you’ll be dining close to the source!

And last but not least - get outside!
Take a bike ride through historic Newport, walk the beaches, the Norman Bird Sanctuary, Sachuest Point and the world famous Cliff Walk.
