Portsmouth is located approximately 25 minutes north of Newport on Aquidneck Island.Founded in 1638, Portsmouth bounded by Middletown to the south and two bodies of water: Narragansett Bay to the west and the Sakonnet River to the east. Here you’ll find several public golf courses, antique shops, stores and lodging options with familiar names, and numerous marinas (the United States Sailing Association, best known as US Sailing, is headquartered in Portsmouth). Interestingly, Portsmouth encompasses four islands:Prudence Island, Patience Island, Hope Island, and Hog Island.
Factoid: Portsmouth was founded by Anne Hutchinson, the first town in the New World to be established by a woman, and was first true democracy in America.
